| Today's internet is so competitive that you need all the help you can get, just to be noticed. One sure way to increase traffic is to use good SEO (Search Engine Optimization) techniques. Did you ever wonder how a search engine could return so many results in such a short time? It is truly amazing when you think that there are over twenty million websites worldwide, containing over a billion pages. Well, they don't try to access all those sites after your inquiry. Instead, it is done beforehand. Search engines crawl (or spider) through every site on the internet looking for key words and phrases so that they have the links ready to produce when a search is initiated. Here are some tips to improve your SEO.
Select your keywords carefully. Spiders look for relevance. Be sure that your site has words that relate to your products and services.
Don't overdo it. Make your wording flow easily. Don't stuff your site with key words. The optimum density is 2-3%. Search engines actually penalize your site if your key word density is too high. Your primary keyword needs to be in your title tag. Be sure it is the same keyword that appears in the text. Again, as is the case with the body text, don't overdo it. Meta tags should also contain keywords. This is not always possible, but wherever you are able to, be sure your Meta tags have keywords. Keywords on click links should not be overlooked. Let's say your site deals with roses and you have a click link to a picture of a rose. “Click Here to Enlarge the Picture” will not work as well as “Click Here to See the Roses”. Revise and update your site's content regularly. Add new articles, feature stories and blogs on a regular basis. If possible, create a system of reciprocal links to and from your site and other complimentary sites. Both sides of a link generally get a rating boost from a hit at either place. Be sure that the links are relevant. Search engines actually penalize you for links that are not logical. Yellow roses linked to yellow shirts won't help. Check on your site's statistics. Which keywords are bringing in the traffic? When you add information to your site that has originated at another site, you need to make sure it is rewritten to appear original. Alternatively, credit the source. If you site does not appear on the first few pages of a search result, it will almost certainly not be read. Think of your own situation. When you enter a search word and you get back a million hits, do you read more than a few pages? Proper SEO use will guarantee you more traffic. |
